Why is a sandwich called a sandwich? It's not made of sand. Why do they call pocket bikes pocket bikes?
After riding bikes since I was a teenager back in the early 60's, I've seen many terms come and go with respect to motorcycles. I recall a time when people who rode American bikes, like a Harley Davidson, as being called negative names relating to renegade members of dirty street bike gangs.
Over the years I've seen renewed interest in American bikes which has paralleled the growth and production of very high quality and extremely competitive bikes from other countries like Europe and Asia. It is as though some people equate the brand or type of vehicle (motorcycle in particular) they use with a person's patriotic loyalty...Which is surely a sign of ignorance in my opinion.
Getting back to your question, the term 'pocket bikes' or 'pocket rockets' is a slang term I first heard used by people who ride Harley's to trivialize the much smaller, very dependable and cheaper bikes which began to be produced in the 1960's. Over the years these bikes from Japan and Europe have come to dominate all facits of the motorcycle industry including performance, innovation and design which leads some people to more 'sour grapes' if you catch my drift.
Don't get me wrong, the same can be said of those whom ride other makes and models of bikes. The relatively new term of 'cuiser' has many connotations which are both used by people to reflect positive and negative views.
Keep in mind these are my views alone and are by no means meant to be misconstrued as being conclusive. I donot mean to bad mouth any type of bike, only to give my perspective and answer with respect to your question. Why do they call pocket bikes pocket bikes?
It is small bike compared to the full size motorcycle. Most guys can just pick it up with one hand, and put it on their truck. It is misleading if you compared to your shirt or pants pockets.
depends how big your pocket is......
