Down by Gilroy is a great place to ride with 100's of miles of trails, flat and stunt. Last time I rode there a group of about 15 pocket bikes was camped out and riding. I saw no trailers, so they must have driven there.Are pocket bikes illegal in California?

Are pocket bikes illegal in California?Haha! I really didn't think I was going to find an official response for this one. But then again is there anything not made illegal that we haven't already put on the books in California. LOL ... sigh ... Not really. :-(
Well here it is taken directly from the California Department of Motor Vehicles:

Miniature vehicles also known as mini-choppers or pocket bikes do not meet Federal Safety Standards and cannot be registered or operated on public streets pursuant to California Vehicle Code (CVC) 搂4751(d). If you receive a citation for operating one of these devices please contact the appropriate Court for settlement of the violation.
You may obtain additional information regarding where and when you can operate a pocket bike through the California Highway Patrol (CHP) website.

*/End of Line
to my knowledge, pocket bikes aren't street legal in any state.
California has pretty strict restrictions on 2strokes and air cooled bikes. I think becaue of the engine size you may be able to use one for recreational use, but the best course of action would be to check with your local department of transportation office for rules and regulations.
